Mumbai Indians’ in-form batsman Suryakumar Yadav’s overlooking for India’s upcoming tour of Australia became a hot topic among the cricket fraternity with many criticizing the national selectors for not selecting him even in the white-ball squad and the latest one is former captain Dilip Vengsarkar.
Suryakumar has been in stunning form for quite some time now and even in the ongoing IPL 2020, the right-hander has scored 283 runs from 11 games so far. He was widely backed to earn his maiden India call-up at least for the T20Is for the upcoming series in Australia.
However, the 30-year-old was yet again overlooked by the national selectors despite his consistent performances in domestic cricket and IPL too – which left disappointed many and now Vengsarkar has expressed his surprise at the omission of “one of the most talented batsmen” of the Indian circuit.
Vengsarkar told the Times of India: “I’m astounded at the omission of ‘Surya,’ who is currently one of the most talented batsmen in the country, from the teams selected for the Australian tour. As far as sheer potential is concerned, I can compare Surya with the best in the Indian team. He has scored runs consistently. I don’t know what else he has to do to merit a place in the Indian team.”
The former chief selector also urged BCCI president Sourav Ganguly to probe the right-handed batsman’s exclusion.
Suryakumar averages 44 in first class with over 5000 runs and averages more than 30 both in List A and T20 and has scored 1831 IPL runs in 96 matches so far.
Vengsarkar signed off by saying, “A batsman is at his peak from the age of 26 to 34. and I feel Surya (30) is at the peak of his career. If form and fitness are not the criteria, then what is it? Can anybody explain? With Rohit (Sharma) out of the team due to (a hamstring) injury, Surya should have been there to strengthen the middle order. BCCI president should question the motive behind dropping Surya.”
