Mukesh received his debut Test cap from senior spinner R Ashwin.
Taking to Twitter, BCCI shared a video of Mukesh’s phone call with his mother. He became lost for words while describing his emotions of sharing the good news with his mother, who always supported his dream of pursuing cricket despite resistance from late father.
Mukesh, 29, became India's 308th Test cricketer after he was handed the debut cap by veteran spinner R Ashwin during the team huddle on Day 1 of the second Test against West Indies in Port of Spain.
This important milestone in his career came as Shardul Thakur sustained a groin injury ahead of the second and final Test.
"My mother told me to stay happy all the time. Keep moving forward. She said her blessings are always with me. For her, all that she wants me to do is keep improving and getting better. This moment is very important for me. I can't explain how happy I am. I made the debut in the morning and in the evening, I am talking to my mother. I am not able to understand what to say," Mukesh said in the clip uploaded by the BCCI on the micro-blogging site.
Mukesh Kumar made it to the Indian Test team on the back of consistent performances in the domestic circuit. He has featured in 39 First-Class matches so far, claiming 149 wickets at an average of 21.55 with six five-wicket hauls.
Moreover, Mukesh also caught everyone’s attention with his impressive display in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 season. Playing for the Delhi Capitals, he picked up seven wickets from 10 matches.
