Team India outplayed West Indies in all facets of the game to register an innings and 141-run victory in the opening Test at Windsor Park, Dominica.

Riding on off-spinner R Ashwin’s five-wicket haul (5-60), India bowled out the hosts for a paltry 150 in the first innings. The visitors then piled up 421/5 (declared) on the board on the back of hundreds from debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal (171), skipper Rohit Sharma (103) and a half-century from Virat Kohli (76).

Ashwin demolished the Caribbean batting line-up in the second innings as well, returning with a seven-wicket haul (7-71) to bundle them out for a mere 130.

After the game, India bowling coach Paras Mhambrey expressed his admiration for Ashwin, who finished the Test match with 12 wickets to his name.

"It was important to score a big first-innings score, which we did and it provided a base to the bowlers. The way Ashwin and (Ravindra) Jadeja bowled is praiseworthy.

"We in the dressing room know the value of a bowler's performance. According to me, Ashwin is one of the greatest match-winners of our country. He has won a lot of matches for us and has been a consistent performer," Mhambrey stated.

He was also amazed by the remarkable composure displayed by young opener Jaiswal on Test debut. The southpaw was adjudged Player-of-the-Match for his marathon knock.

"The way he (Jaiswal) batted was fabulous and especially for a debutant to come and score a century and that too on not an easy wicket. It was a slow wicket, got slower as the game progressed, stroke-making wasn't easy," Mhambrey said in praise of the 21-year-old.

"If you look at the way he bats, he likes to take on the game but the way he applied himself on this wicket was very good to see.

"That's what you need at the international level, adapt yourself to different conditions, situations and that's what the team expected and he did the role. It's definitely very heartening, positive. The performance will give him lot of confidence going ahead," he added.

The Dominica Test marked the beginning of India’s campaign in the World Test Championship 2023-25 cycle, and Mhambrey was happy to start the series on a perfect note.

"Ideal start for a Test match, that's what you expect, that's how you want to carry the performance from the last series. Honestly, if you ask me, we didn't expect that to be so easy."

Despite the crushing win, India cannot afford to take West Indies lightly in the second Test, clarified Mhambrey.

"These are outside noises. There is nothing as such in the dressing room. We came here to play international cricket, Test cricket, which is the highest level of cricket. There is no big motivation than this for a player," he said.

"Our plans were set. We knew our approach and we are going to give the same application throughout the series. What people think outside doesn't matter, what matters is our thought process and execution."

The second Test will be held at Queen's Park Oval in Port of Spain from July 20.
