Akshar was named Player of the Match for his 64*.
Earlier, West Indies batted first after captain Nicholas Pooran won the toss. Shai Hope scored 115 runs in his 100th ODI match and Pooran supported by hitting 74 runs as West Indies posted 311 runs on the board.
Despite half-centuries from Shreyas Iyer (63) and Sanju Samson (55) and 43 from Shubman Gill, India was struggling to get par with the rising required net run rate. This was until Akshar Patel decided to go on an all-out attack in the last few overs with India needing quick runs to reduce the gap and win the match.
He finished unbeaten on 64 with 5 sixes and 3 fours to his name in just 35 balls as India won the match by 2 wickets in the last over with Akshar hitting a six to end the game. He was also named the Player of the Match for his exploits.
This led to Rohit Sharma, who has been rested for the ODIs, to take to Twitter and laud Akshar Patel and posted: “Woah that was some performance from team India last night. Bapu badhu Saru che @akshar2026 @bcci”
To this, Axar Patel replied: “Badhu saru che rohit bhai ???? thanks.. cheers”
