Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill are being mentored by Yuvraj Singh.
Shabnam Singh, mother of ex-India cricketer Yuvraj Singh revealed that young India batters Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill are scared of him. Both Abhishek and Shubman have honed their cricketing skills under the 2011 World Cup winner.
The depth of his mentorship for two of India's greatest emerging stars, Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma, has just been revealed by his mother, Shabnam Singh.
In an interview, Shabnam highlighted how attentively Yuvraj monitors the progress of his protégés, despite their spectacular climb to the national level.
“He has these young kids — Shubman and Abhishek. He watches every game they play and calls them in the evening to discuss their performance. They are just petrified of him,” she said in a video.
While it may sound tough, this mentorship is based on a strong emotional investment. Yuvraj has acknowledged that he gets scared watching the duo bat, a role reversal from his playing days.
“My mom used to get nervous when I was at the crease. Now I get nervous when they are batting. I’ve spent a lot of time with them when they were growing up — training, mentoring, and just being there,” Yuvraj confessed.
Shubman Gill, in particular, is being groomed as India's future ODI captain, having already captained the national side in the T20 format. His technique, attitude, and consistency have helped him establish himself as a key member of India's batting lineup.
Abhishek Sharma, too, has established himself as a strong opener in the Twenty20 format. Recognized for his bold stroke play and versatility
