BCCI retired MS Dhoni's jersey number 7 last year.
He remains the only captain to win the 2007 T20 World Cup, the 2011 ODI World Cup and the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013 for India. Apart from this, under MS Dhoni’s captaincy, India became the no.1 ranked Test team for the first time.
MS Dhoni called time on his illustrious career in 2020 August, but he continues to lead the Chennai Super Kings. Dhoni recently won the IPL 2023 and will return to action in the upcoming IPL 2024.
In a fitting tribute to Dhoni's legacy, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) took the extraordinary step of retiring the No.7 jersey in December 2023.
During a promotional event, MS Dhoni was asked why he uses the number 7 jersey and Dhoni responded to the anchor's question about the number seven, leaving the entire room in splits.
"That is the time or day my parents decided I would come on earth," Dhoni said in a hilarious response.
“So, I was born on the 7th of July. So July again the seventh month. 81 was the year so 8-1 = 7. So it was very easy for me to go out there when they asked me, 'Okay, what number do you want,” he added.
