Sunil Narine became the first cricketer in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL 2023) to be handed a red card for a slow over rate offense and was sent off the field in the recent match between Trinbago Knight Riders and St Kitts & Nevis Patriots.

CPL organizers had come up with a novel concept of red cards to combat slow over-rate issues and as per the ruling, the red card will only come into play if the bowling team is found behind the rate at the start of the 20th over. The 85-minute rule for an innings is being take into consideration in the league, implying that every over will be given a period of four minutes and 15 seconds.

Based on the calculation, the 19th over must be completed in 80 minutes and 45 seconds. And if found behind the rate, the on-field umpire will issue the red card to the bowling side following which the skipper will pick a player whom the team will have to lose for the final six balls of the innings.

In addition to it, the team will also be compelled to field only 2 fielders outside the 30-yard circle.

During the CPL 2023 match on Sunday, the on-field umpire halted the play before the start of the final over and handed Trinbago Knight Riders the red card and Pollard immediately signaled Narine to take the bench.

By then the spinner had completed his four-over quota and had figures of 3/24.

In reply, Nicholas Pooran hammered 61 in 32 balls to lay the foundation for the chase, which was completed with Pollard (37) and Andre Russell (23) making crucial runs as TKR won with six wickets in hand.

Meanwhile, TKR captain Kieron Pollard was very unhappy with the red-card ruling and called it ridiculous.

He said after the match: "To be honest, it will take away the hard work everyone has done, We are like the pawns and we are going to do what we are told. "We are going to play as fast as we can. If you are penalized for 30-45 seconds in a tournament like this, it is absolutely ridiculous."
