New Zealand batter Henry Nicholls suffered one of the unluckiest and probably the most bizarre dismissal during day one of the Third Test against New Zealand at Headingley on Thursday.

Kane Williamson won the toss and chose to bat first at Leeds and Stuart Broad dismissed Tom Latham for a duck. Will Young (20) and Kane Williamson (31) stabilized the innings a bit, but the Kiwis kept losing wickets at regular intervals.

Devon Conway fell for 26 and New Zealand was in trouble when they hoped Henry Nicholls and Daryl Mitchell would help them out of the hole. Nicholls looked good for his 19 runs and then got out in a way that left everyone from the England team to Nicholls and even the commentators dumbfounded.

Nicholls stepped out to play a booming drive off Jack Leach and managed to get a lot of bat on the ball. However, it went straight towards Daryl Mitchell at the non-striker’s end, who didn’t have much time to react and get out of the way.

As he tried to avoid getting hurt, the drive zeroed in on the middle of Mitchell’s flailing bat as he attempted to pull it out of the way, and deflected away towards mid-off, while the umpire at the bowling end ducked and weaved to save himself.

The ball lobbed towards the fielder where a stunned Alex Lees snaffled the chance to send Nicholls back to the pavilion for 19 and leave New Zealand five down.

How has it got there?! Mitchell’s at the non-striker’s end, he’s trying to get his bat out of the way, the umpire’s trying to get out of the way… and Mitchell’s middled it straight to mid-off. I cannot believe that, I really can’t,” exclaimed Nasser Hussain on commentary.
