India’s ace off-spinner R Ashwin is currently playing in the England county championship match for Surrey against Somerset and despite having a lull start to the match where he picked a single wicket in the first innings and scoring a duck, the off-spinner roared back in the second do.

Surrey had made 429 in the first innings, where Ashwin had figures of 1/99 in 43 overs, and in reply, Somerset could only manage 240 runs with captain Rory Burns and Mark Stoneman making half-centuries. Ashwin recorded a first-ball duck, as he fell to Jack Leach.

Burns decided to open the bowling with R Ashwin in the second innings, In fact, he only operated with spinners in the Somerset second innings and the gamble paid off. R Ashwin picked 6/27 in 15 overs and Dan Moriarty picked 4/20 in 7 overs with Amar Virdi giving just 18 runs in his 7 overs.

This was an exemplary performance by the Indian tweaker, who played this match in place of injured Kyle Jamieson, to get some practice before the England Test series which begins at Nottingham from August 4.

Surrey was set a target of 259 runs thanks to Ashwin’s heroics as Somerset was bundled out for 69 runs in their second innings.

The cricket fraternity was all praises for Ashwin and lauded him on Twitter for his brilliant performance with the ball.
