Team India had won the 2011 World Cup by defeating Sri Lanka in the final.
Ten years down the lane, several members of that triumphant ‘Men in Blue’ squad are recalling their memories from the showpiece tournament.
Taking to Twitter, former India opener Virender Shewag, who made 380 runs in that marquee event wrote: “April 2: 10 years ago, the moment of a lifetime.”
Batting legend Sachin Tendulkar, who is currently in hospital due to COVID-19, also wished the fellow countrymen and his teammates on the 10th anniversary of World Cup victory.
Notably, Tendulkar was the top run-getter for India in the 2011 World Cup with 482 runs from 9 innings, including two centuries and as many fifties.
Yuvraj Singh, who was awarded Player-of-the-Tournament for his 362 runs and 15 wickets in the competition, tweeted: “April 2, 2011 - a day when history was created! We wanted to win the WC for India & for the master @sachin_rt who carried the nation’s expectations over decades! Indebted to be able to represent India & bring glory to our nation”.
Left-handed opener Gautam Gambhir, who played a match-winning knock of 97 in the final against Sri Lanka, wrote: “A billion Indians won the World Cup on this day! Jai Hind! #10Years #ProudlyIndian”.
Middle-order batsman Suresh Raina, who played instrumental knocks in the quarter-final and semi-final against Australia and Pakistan, wrote: “#10years of winning the World Cup, fulfilling the dream of every Indian around the world. It’s such a nostalgic feeling where I can relive each moment of lifting the trophy & making our country proud. It will be cherished forever. #Worldcup2011 #IndianCricketTeam @BCCI”.
Other members of India’s 2011 World Cup squad also took to the micro-blogging site to express their joy.
Apart from Gambhir, then skipper MS Dhoni was the hero in the final as he scored 91 not out to take India over the line while chasing Sri Lanka’s stiff target of 275.
Soon after Dhoni hit the winning six off Nuwan Kulasekara, most of the Indian players went numb with some of them even shedding tears at the Wankhede Stadium.
