Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma urge fellow citizens to follow PM Modi’s call to light candles at 9 PM

PM Modi has asked public to light diyas, candles, use mobile flashlights at 9 pm on April 5 in the fight against COVID-19.

Indian cricket stars Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have urged fellow citizens to follow Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call to switch off all lights at home and light a diya, candle, torch or flashlight at 9 PM for nine minutes on Sunday (April 5), as a sign of solidarity amid the ongoing fight against COVID-19 pandemic.

"The power of the stadium is in its fans. The spirit of India is in its people. Tonight 9pm for 9min, Let's show the world, we stand as ONE. Let's show our Health Warriors, We stand behind them. Team India - IGNITED," Kohli tweeted.

Taking to Twitter, Rohit wrote: "Team India, we cant get this prescription wrong. Our life depends on winning this test match. Show your solidarity, join us in "The Great Team India Huddle" today 5th April 9pm for 9min. Light to Fight. Are you with me?"

Kohli and Rohit were among the 40-odd elite sportspersons with whom PM Modi had a video conference on April 3 to discuss the Coronavirus crisis.

Earlier this week, the duo donated generously to the COVID-19 relief funds set-up by the state and central governments.

India is currently under a nationwide 21-day lockdown to contain the spread of this deadly virus. The lockdown will end on April 14.

As of April 5, India has recorded more than 3000 positive cases and 77 deaths due to Coronavirus, which has claimed over 64,000 lives while infecting close to 1,204,000 globally.
