Rohit Sharma donates generously to help India get 'back on feet' in battle against COVID-19

Rohit extended his support to the state and central governments in their efforts to combat the pandemic.

Rohit Sharma has become the latest Indian cricketer to extend his support to the state and central governments in their efforts to combat the rapidly-spreading Coronavirus.

Rohit, who is the vice-captain of India’s limited-overs side, has made a generous donation of 80 lakh in total. He contributed Rs 45 lakh and Rs 25 lakh to the PM and CM's Relief Fund (Maharashtra) respectively.

The 32-year-old has given Rs 5 lakh to 'Zomato Feeding India', which is helping families affected by the ongoing nationwide lockdown, and another Rs 5 lakh to aid the welfare of stray dogs.

On Tuesday (March 31), Rohit took to Twitter and wrote: “We need our country back on feet & the onus is on us. I’ve done my bit to donate 45lakhs to #PMCaresFunds, 25lakhs to #CMReliefFund Maharashtra, 5lakhs to @FeedingIndia and 5lakhs to #WelfareOfStrayDogs.Let’s get behind our leaders and support them @narendramodi @CMOMaharashtra.”

Besides, Indian cricketers such as Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Shikhar Dhawan, Ajinkya Rahane, Gautam Gambhir, Sourav Ganguly, among others have also come forward to help the needy in this time of crisis.

As of March 31, the overall number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in India has crossed the 1300-mark with over 35 deaths reported in the country due to the deadly virus.

Globally, the outbreak has claimed more than 37,000 lives and infected over 785,000 people thus far.
