The second Test will be played in Mackay from August 22 onwards.
Bangladesh achieved a milestone win in their cricketing history as they defeated Australia in the first Test in Darwin on August 16, 2026. Bangladesh was set 57 runs to win the game, and the Asian side achieved the win with 9 wickets in hand and in only 14.2 overs.
With this amazing win, Bangladesh became only the second Asian team after India to defeat Australia in a Test in Australia in the 21st century. In just their third Test in Australia, the visitors achieved their first-ever Test victory on Australian soil with the historic triumph in Darwin.
Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto called the victory the biggest in Bangladesh's cricket history across formats after the team astonished the cricket world by finishing the chase in the second session of Day 4.
In the current World Test Championship (WTC) 2025–27 cycle, Shanto has now guided Bangladesh to three straight Test triumphs. He called the victory over Australia the nation's greatest victory and encouraged his team to do even better in the future. “I think this is the biggest win so far for Bangladesh cricket in any format. We believe that, and going forward, we will do something special in the future. Very happy and proud of myself and the way the boys played. Really proud of that. We did a lot of hard work and are really happy to win with this side,” Shanto said during the post-match presentation.
Shanto claims that players' love for the longest format has grown as a result of Bangladesh playing more Test matches in recent years. He thinks that change in perspective is what led to Sunday's historic victory.
“I think that is the biggest change in Bangladesh cricket in the Test format. Normally, five or six years ago, the pace bowlers didn’t want to play Test cricket because we didn’t have enough opportunities to play Test cricket. But in the last two or three years, we’ve been playing a lot of Test matches, and the boys are giving importance to the Test format. So they now want to play, and they want to perform because they want to be world-class," Shanto said.
“So that is the mindset they have. And especially the senior guys we have, Mushfiqur Rahim and Mominul Haque, they help them a lot and encourage them to play Test cricket. So those are the areas they think about, and that is the mindset," he added.
Opener Tanzid Tamim also received rich praise from captain Najmul Shanto for his brilliant 101 in Bangladesh's first innings, which laid the foundation for their big score of 426 in response to Australia’s 198 runs in the first innings.
Shanto said the team wanted a top-order batter capable of making a significant impact, and Tanzid delivered when it mattered.
“I think he’s exciting. If you look at his white-ball game, he always plays attacking cricket. But in this Test match, he showed his character. He was very calm and played the merit of the ball. We all know he can play Test cricket. As a top-order batsman, we want someone to make an impact for the team, and he delivered in this match," Shanto said.
Bangladesh will now have a big chance of winning the Test series in Australia when the two sides clash in the second and final Test at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay from August 22 onwards.
