Varun Chakravarthy picked one wicket on his T20I debut.
Former India batsman VVS Laxman was elated that the mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy has finally got the opportunity to play for India in the first T20I of the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka.
On Sunday, July 25, Varun made his debut for India and returned with figures of 4-0-28-1, bowled an over inside the powerplay, two overs in the middle, and another at the death as India bowled out Sri Lanka for 126 to win the game by 38 runs in Colombo.
Before the Sri Lanka tour, the spinner was called up to the Indian squad twice but he had failed to pass the fitness test, though, he managed to make it to the national squad for the ongoing T20I series and even had a promising start against the Islanders on Sunday.
Laxman told Star Sports: “Firstly, I am glad that he (Varun Chakravarthy) got this opportunity because twice he was already selected, but didn’t pass the fitness test and was not part of the squad. I think there’s a lot of chat about the mystery surrounding his bowling.”
He further added, “I was talking with the Sunrisers batsmen and they are all impressed with the way and the consistency with which he bowls in different parts and phases of the match.”
The legendary batsman also said the way Varun bowls with consistency and his ability to take wickets in different parts of the game makes him an X-factor for the team.
Laxman said, “He can bowl with the new ball, he can come and take wickets whenever the captain and the teams want to break a partnership – that means he’s got an X-factor. And we just want him to get exposure of international cricket and the only way he can do that is by making him play.”
He signed off by saying, “So, I’m sure that he is really looking forward to this opportunity, but one thing which we have realized over years is to make sure you give him the opportunity. Don’t expect miracles from game one. It is very important to show patience and belief in a player.”
The second T20I will be played on July 27.
