India defeated Sri Lanka by 7 wickets in the first ODI to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Shikhar Dhawan and co were in full control of the game and the hosts never looked like making a comeback.

Former India batsman Wasim Jaffer praised Indian fielders after eight out of nine Sri Lankan batters were caught out. The ninth wicket was a run-out by vice-captain Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Sri Lanka could only manage 262/9 in 50 overs which turned out to be way below a competitive total against India. The visitors took on the Sri Lankan bowling attack and left them hopeless with their attacking approach.

India reached the target of 263 runs in 36.4 overs. Dhawan stayed unbeaten on 86 while Suryakumar added a 31 not-out to win the match.

The assault was started by India opener Prithvi Shaw who smashed 24-ball 43 runs and won the Player of the Match award. Ishan Kishan also scored 59 runs in 42 deliveries before getting out to Lakshan Sandakan.

Jaffer posted a wordplay for Shaw after he smashed a boundary off Dushmantha Chameera. "Chameera ko kyu maara? @PrithviShaw : Dushmantha #SLvIND," he tweeted.
