Rohit Sharma was named the vice-captain of Indian Test team starting the SA Tests.
Rohit, who was also named the new ODI and T20I captain of the Indian team recently, replaced Ajinkya Rahane as Virat Kohli’s deputy in the longest format of the game and his first assignment will be the three Tests against South Africa which begin from December 26 onwards.
South Africa remains the only frontier for the Indian team where they haven’t won a Test series. Their best performance since 1992 was a 1-1 draw in the 2010-11 series under the captaincy of MS Dhoni and India has won only three Tests in all in the rainbow nation.
