Mayank Agarwal’s homecoming to his state of Karnataka proved to be an unhappy one. India faced off against Sri Lanka in the second and final Test of the series at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru for a day-night Test match, the first-ever between the two sides.

India captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and chose to bat first on a pitch that looked dry and was expected to assist the spinners straight away. India made one change, bringing in Akshar Patel for Jayant Yadav. Sri Lanka made two changes with Kusal Mendis and Praveen Jayawickrama coming in for Pathum Nissanka and Lahiru Kumara respectively.

Agarwal became the first casualty for the Indian side, as he was dismissed run out in a bizarre fashion. In the fourth ball of the second over, Sri Lanka’s Vishwa Fernando’s ball appeared to have hit Mayank’s pad first. The Sri Lankans went up in a big appeal but the umpire did not seem convinced.

Later replays showed that there was an inside edge from the bat and also the bowler Vishwa Fernando had overstepped the bowling crease, resulting in a no-ball, so LBW was out of the question.

Meanwhile, Mayank tried to sneak a single but failed to notice that Praveen Jayawickrama had almost collected the ball. Rohit Sharma, who initially responded, tried to send Agarwal back, but by that time it was too late.

Jayawickrama lobbed it back towards Sri Lanka keeper Niroshan Dickwella with Mayank having no chance to return to the crease on time. He walked back to the pavilion for 4 runs.

Here is the video of his dismissal:

At the time of writing this piece, India 93/4 at lunch with Rohit falling for 15, Hanuma Vihari for 31 and Virat Kohli for 23.
