Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar hailed Rohit Sharma’s batting performance during Team India’s 6-wicket win over Australia in the second T20I on Friday (September 23) in Nagpur.

The second T20I between India and Australia was curtailed to eight overs per side due to a wet outfield, and Australia went on to post 90 runs in their eight overs on the board against the hosts in Nagpur.

Chasing 91 for victory, Rohit single-handedly took India over the line with 4 balls to spare to level the ongoing T20I series at 1-1 with the series decider set to be played on September 25 in Hyderabad. The right-hander smashed 4 fours and as many sixes during his unbeaten knock of 46 runs off 20 balls.

After the match, the legendary batter said that Rohit played with a measured approach and didn’t play any unwarranted shots in the second T20I against Australia on Friday. He further mentioned that when the Indian skipper tries to play big shots on the off-side, that’s the only thing that troubles him.

Sunil Gavaskar said on Star Sports: “What you saw with Rohit today was a measured approach. It wasn’t anything where he was looking to defend, but he was being a lot more selective. And look, when he is playing those flick shots or the swivel pull shots, he is very good at that.”

He continued, “Where he gets into trouble is where he is looking to play on the off-side, just tonks it up like that, that’s where he hits the ball up in the air rather than into the stands. That’s the only thing that he is going to watch out for.”

Gavaskar also explained how he didn’t go bonkers straight away, but played based on the line and length of the ball against Australia in Nagpur. He signed off by saying, “Otherwise, when he is hitting it in his range, he has got absolutely no problems at all. That’s what he should be looking to do. Today was such a measured innings. He was waiting, cutting the ball, pulling, he was not going bang straight away. That is the reason why he batted so brilliantly.”
