5 records that Virat ‘King’ Kohli might possibly break in coming future

These are the five records that Virat Kohli can break in international cricket in near future.

By Jatin Sharma - 24 Aug, 2018

Virat Kohli recently scored 97 and 103 in the third Test win over England in the ongoing five-match Test series. This was the second time in the series that he scored 200 runs in a match, with the first time being the first Test at Edgbaston where he scored 149 and 51.

Making and breaking records has become a habit for Virat Kohli, who has 5994 runs in 69 Tests and 9779 runs in 211 ODIs and 2102 runs in 62 T20I matches. He also has a total of 58 centuries in international cricket, with 23 hundreds in Tests and 35 centuries in ODIs.

Given that he is on a record-breaking stint right now, Team COC presents five world records that Virat Kohli might break in coming future.

Let’s have a look at 5 records that Virat ‘King’ Kohli might possibly break in coming future

Most number of centuries in ODIs and Tests
Current record holder: Sachin Tendulkar (49 centuries in ODIs and 51 centuries in Tests)

Scoring a hundred in any format of the game is a great achievement for any batsman. However, former India batsman Sachin Tendulkar made scoring centuries an art. He started by scoring his first century in Tests at the age of 17 years but had to play more than 75 matches and five years from his ODI debut in 1989 to score his first century in ODIs.

But once he started, Sachin broke records after record, as he broke the long-standing Test 34-century record of Sunil Gavaskar in 2005, by scoring his 35th century. He had also broken Desmond Haynes' record of 17 ODI centuries in 1998 by scoring his 18th ton against Zimbabwe.

By the end, Sachin Tendulkar finished with 51 centuries in 200 Tests and 49 centuries in 463 ODI matches at the age of 40 in 2013. He is the first and only cricketer to score 100 centuries in international cricket.

Now Virat Kohli is 29-years-old and has 23 centuries in 69 Tests and 35 centuries in 211 ODI matches. He needs 15 more ODI hundreds and 29 more Test centuries to break Sachin’s record and given his fitness and century scoring ability, it is more than possible that both records will be broken by Virat Kohli in coming time.

Kohli is at the peak of his fitness and his form is constant; and is likely that by the time he calls time on his career, the record for most international centuries will be held by him.

Break Sachin’s record of 100 international centuries

At present, Sachin Tendulkar is the first and only international cricketer to have 100 centuries in international cricket. Sachin Tendulkar’s career spanned from 1989-2013 and he played 463 ODIs and first and only cricketer to play 200 Tests.

His longevity in the game, fitness, and ability to change with time helped him reach the zenith of run scoring in international cricket.

Virat Kohli is similar to Sachin Tendulkar in many aspects. He made his international debut a decade ago and has put up 58 centuries in international cricket by the age of 29 years. His century scoring ability in ODIs has stunned everyone, as he is the second highest century making in the format, behind Sachin Tendulkar.

It is a very possible scenario that Virat not only ends up reaching Sachin’s mark of 100 centuries in international cricket but goes way beyond the record. He still has 7-8 years of international cricket in him and if he keeps himself free of any big injuries and his form stays relatively the same throughout the coming few years, he could very well be the holder of the record of the most centuries in international cricket.

Most runs in T20 Internationals
Current record holder: Martin Guptill (NZ- 2271 runs)

New Zealand’s Martin Guptill currently holds the record of most runs in T20Is with 2271 runs. He is followed by his countryman Brendon McCullum (2140 runs), Shoaib Malik of Pakistan (2121 runs) and Virat Kohli (2102 runs).

Kohli is just 169 runs adrift of the record currently held by Guptill. McCullum has retired from international cricket and at 36 years old, Malik may also play just a couple of years more. This means that Virat Kohli may very well become the holder of the record for most runs in T20Is.

Kohli has played 62 matches and has scored the runs at an average of 48.88 with a strike rate of 136.22 and if he keeps going at that rate, Kohli will definitely end up as the highest run-getter in T20I cricket as well, if he continues to manage his workload and play all the three formats for some overs to come in future.

Most centuries as captain in Tests and ODIs
Current record holder: ODIs- Ricky Ponting (22 centuries), Tests – Graeme Smith (25 centuries)

The record for most centuries as captain in ODIs is held by Australia’s Ricky Ponting with 22 centuries in 220 innings as captain. While the same record for most centuries as captain in Tests is held by South Africa’s Graeme Smith with 25 centuries in 108 Tests.

Virat Kohli currently has 13 centuries in ODIs as captain and 16 centuries as captain in Tests. Despite his century scoring speed, he still requires to score 10 centuries in ODIs more as a captain and 10 more in Tests to break both records.

However, with his consistency of scoring centuries in both formats, the records of Ricky Ponting and Graeme Smith are in danger of being not only breaking but being obliterated by a phenomenon called King Kohli.

Kohli still has quite a few years to go before he hangs his gloves and by the time he is done, this record will be amongst the dozens of other records that will be broken by him.

Most centuries in World Cup
Current record holder: Sachin Tendulkar (6 centuries)

The Cricket World Cup is the most prestigious tournament in One-Day international cricket and almost all the batting records are currently being held by India’s Sachin Tendulkar.

Tendulkar debuted in World cup cricket in 1992 and played his last World Cup in 2011 when he lifted the title. Tendulkar has scored the most runs (2278), most 50+ scores (21) and most centuries (6) in the history of the tournament.

He scored seven 50+ scores in a single World Cup tournament in 2003 and most runs in a single tournament with 673 runs in the same 2003 World Cup.

Virat Kohli had a brilliant start to his World Cup career, as he scored a century on World Cup debut against Bangladesh in 2011 and then scored another century against Pakistan in the 2015 World Cup. Given that he will lead the team in the upcoming World Cup in 2019 in England and will most likely play in the future editions of the tournament in 2023 in India and 2027; it is more or less that Kohli will end up with the record of most centuries in World Cup by the time he hangs his gloves.
