The third and final ODI will be played at Lord's on July 19.
England leveled the ongoing three-match ODI series 1-1 against India after winning the second ODI on July 16 at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff. India had won the first game in Birmingham, but were completely outplayed by England this time.
Harry Brook won the toss and chose to bowl first, bringing in extra pacer Saqib Mahmood, and Gius Atkinson replaced Josh Tongue. Shubman Gill gave a good start with 30 runs in 31 balls, but Rohit Sharma struggled for rhythm, scoring 26 in 47 balls.
Virat Kohli made 65 and Shreyas Iyer made 66, but India lost lots of wickets for very few runs in the middle order, as they could only muster 235 runs in 44 overs.
In reply, Joe Root remained anchored to one end of the wicket as England lost wickets at the other end. HE made 99* with 9 fours, while contributions from Sam Curran (26), Will Jacks (30) and Gus Atkinson (23*) took England home by 4 wickets in 44.1 overs.
During the match, several media reports stated that BCCI selectors and Indian team management had told veteran batter Rohit Sharma that he was not in their plans for the 2027 World Cup and that the third ODI of the series, at Lord’s on July 19, is likely to be his final one for India.
Fans were concerned when a video from India's second ODI against England in Cardiff on Thursday went viral on social media, even though neither Rohit nor the Indian team management had released an official statement.
Jasprit Bumrah, Virat Kohli, and Rohit are shown in the video looking dejected. Fans have come up with many different ideas, even though the mood might be a reaction to India's batting collapse after being in a dominant position.
Many think that the gloomy atmosphere resulted from Rohit telling his teammates that the Lord's ODI might be his last game for India.
Here are the reactions:
Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of the Indian men's selection committee, was in Cardiff. According to sources, the 39-year-old is no longer being considered by the selectors for the ODI World Cup next year.
“The national selectors are keen that Yashasvi Jaiswal, who scored two hundreds in three innings, get a longer rope. There are around 20 games, and Jaiswal needs to be given those 20 games," a BCCI source was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.
“No one can tell Rohit to retire, but it is very clear that going forward for the home series vs West Indies in September, the selectors would like to look forward. Rohit’s future is a decision that he needs to take," he added.
Rohit Sharma has had a tough year in 2026 in ODIs, scoring only one fifty.
