India had registered a comprehensive 151-run victory over England in the second Test at Lord’s during the 2021 tour, with Rohit slamming a classy 83 in the first innings to set the tone.
The right-handed opener was looking set to reach the three-figure mark but he chopped on a delivery from James Anderson to the stumps.
Recalling the dismissal, former India head coach Ravi Shastri said Rohit was ‘upset’ after returning to the change room and ‘remained in a zone’ for a while.
“When Rohit got out, he came back to the dressing room and just sat quietly on a table. He was in a daze. He just wanted that hundred. A special feeling for any player to get a hundred at Lord’s. And you could see that he was really, really dejected. But he made up for it at The Oval," Shastri said on air during the second ODI between India and England at Lord’s.
Rohit Sharma finished the series as India’s highest run-getter with 368 runs to his name, despite missing out on the rescheduled fifth Test at Edgbaston. In four Tests, he registered scores of 36, 12*, 83, 21, 19, 59, 11 and 127.
The century in the Oval Test was Rohit’s first away from home, resulting in India’s stunning 157-run victory.
Earlier this month, he couldn’t feature in the rescheduled fifth Test after testing positive for COVID-19. India suffered a seven-wicket defeat at Edgbaston and the five-match series ended in a 2-2 draw.
