The International Cricket Council (ICC) has imposed 40 percent fine and penalised two World Test Championship points on the England and Indian cricket teams for maintaining a slow over-rate in the first Test at Trent Bridge, which ended in a draw on Sunday (August 8).

“Both the teams now have two points each in the ICC World Test Championship 2021-23 standings heading into the second Test at Lord's,” the apex body said in a statement.

According to ICC’s points system for WTC 2021-23, each team will be awarded 12 points for a win, six for a tie, four for a draw and zero for a loss.

“Apart from the point deduction, hosts England were also fined 40% of their match fee for slow over-rate while Virat Kohli's India were also penalised 40% by match referee Chris Broad,” ICC’s statement further read.

Coming to the match, the opening Test ended in a draw as a result of the relentless rain on the final day.

Chasing 209 in the fourth innings, the visitors were 51/1 at the close of play on Day 4 with Rohit Sharma (12*) and Cheteshwar Pujara (12*) unbeaten in the middle.

The second Test will be held at the iconic Lord’s, starting Thursday (August 12).
