Virat Kohli was the toast of India’s innings in the ongoing first semi-final of the ICC World Cup 2023 against New Zealand. This match is being played in Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium on November 15, 2023.

Rohit Sharma won the toss and decided to bat first. And he started in an ominous mood as well, scoring 47 runs in 29 balls, adding 81 runs for the first wicket with Shubman Gill. Gill, himself scored 80*, though he had to retire hurt on 79* due to severe cramps.

However, the stage belonged to Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer. The duo added 163 runs together as India was propelled to a huge total in the knockout match. Virat Kohli made 117 with 9 fours and 2 sixes, while Iyer made 105 in 70 balls with 8 sixes and 4 fours to his name.

CWC 2023: Indian cricket fraternity applauds as Virat Kohli becomes first batter to hit 50 ODI centuries

In the end, KL Rahul’s 39* took India to 397/4 in 50 overs. This is the highest score by a team in a World Cup knockout match, going past New Zealand’s 393 against West Indies in the 2015 World Cup quarter-final match.

Virat Kohli’s 117 was his 3rd century in this ongoing ICC World Cup 2023 and he broke Sachin Tendulkar’s long-standing record of 49 ODI centuries in the process. He became the first batter to make 50 ODI tons and the first to make 700-plus runs in one ICC World Cup edition.

The international cricket fraternity was stunned by Kohli’s performance with the bat and lauded him on X.
