India captain Rohit Sharma broke Chris Gayle’s long-standing record for most sixes in Cricket World Cup history and also became the first to hit 50 maximums in ICC CWC tournaments. He achieved the record in the ongoing first CWC 2023 semi-final between India and New Zealand in Mumbai.

India won the toss and batted first with Rohit Sharma giving India a flying start. He added 71 runs in 8.1 overs with Shubman Gill for the opening wicket. He hit 4 sixes and 4 fours in his 29-ball 47-run knock before getting out caught off the bowling of Tim Southee.

The four sixes made Rohit Sharma the first-ever batter to hit 50 plus sixes in ICC World Cups. He went past Chris Gayle’s record of 49 sixes. Not only did 'Hitman' Rohit break the overall record, but he also became the batter with the most sixes in a single World Cup edition.

Along with this record, Rohit now has record for most sixes in a single World Cup edition with 28 sixes to his name. This achievement once again saw him surpass Chris Gayle, who had hit 26 maximums in the 2015 World Cup.

Rohit's record-breaking moment came in the fifth over of the match against New Zealand, when he pulled a delivery from Trent Boult over deep backward square leg for his 50th six in World Cups.
