Ahead of their World Cup 2023 clash against India in Pune on Thursday (October 19), Bangladesh are sweating over the fitness of skipper and No.1 all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan.

Shakib picked up a left quad injury during Bangladesh’s last fixture against New Zealand at Chepauk on October 13.

Addressing the media on the eve of India match, Bangladesh head coach Chandika Hathurusingha said that they will take a call on Shakib’s participation on Thursday morning.

Hathurusingha also confirmed that Shakib had a good batting session on Tuesday and they’re awaiting his scan results.

“He had a good batting session yesterday and did a little bit of running between the wickets as well. We did a scan today, we are waiting for the result. At the moment, he is okay,” Hathurusingha told reporters.

The coach also made it clear that they won’t play Shakib Al Hasan if he is not fully fit.

“We haven't tried with him bowling yet. We will assess him again and we will make a decision. If he is not ready to play, we won't risk him. But if he is ready, then there is a chance of him playing tomorrow,” Hathurusingha added.

While India are coming into this game on the back of three successive wins, Bangladesh seem to struggling in the showpiece tournament. The Tigers opened their World Cup campaign with a big win over Afghanistan but went down against England and New Zealand in the next two outings.
