Bangladesh and Afghanistan clashed in their ICC Cricket world Cup opener in Dharamshala on Saturday, October 7. Bangladesh registered an easy win over Afghanistan by 6 wickets chasing a small target.

Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan had won the toss and chose to bowl first. Afghanistan batters got start as Rahmanullah Gurbaz made 44, Ibrahim Zadran and Azmatullah Omarzai scored 22 runs each. But they could only make 156 runs as Shakin and Mehidy Hasan Miraz took three wickets apiece.

In response, Miraz (57) and Najmul Hossain Shanto (59*) took Bangladesh to the win with 6 wickets in hand and 92 balls remaining.

During the Afghanistan innings, a bizarre and funny incident occurred as Mujeeb Ur Rahman, who came out to bat at No. 8, forgot to wear his box or abdomen guard before stepping on the field. Mehidy Hasan was ready to continue with his over and Fielders had already taken their positions and were all set for the next delivery.

That’s when Mujeeb gestured at the bowler, asking him to stop the run-up. Everyone wondered what happened until a substitute fielder from the Afghanistan dugout was spotted rushing into the ground with a box in his hands.

On the field, Litton Das and other Bangladeshi players had fun at the expense of Mujeeb as they waited for him to put on the box and get on with the game. Matthew Hayden and Simon Doull, who were serving the commentary duty, were left in splits.

Hayden said on-air, “Well, that’s a mistake at any given time of the day. That should be the first thing that you put in your package.” Doull called it a proper “village cricket” stuff and added: “You can’t hide it, chief, we all know! He’s trying to hide in his hand! You can’t hide it! We all know what’s going on.”
