Rohit Sharma was appointed India’s all-format skipper last year after Virat Kohli relinquished T20I and Test captaincy and was sacked as ODI captain.

Under his leadership, India played the semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2022, final of the World Test Championship (WTC) this year and recently clinched the Asia Cup title.

Rohit’s next big assignment as a captain is the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, slated to get underway on October 5. The showpiece tournament at home is a great opportunity for the Indian team to end the global trophy drought.

Notably, the Men in Blue haven’t won an ICC tournament since 2013 but former skipper Sourav Ganguly is backing Rohit to pull off something special.

"Very good captain. He has won Asia Cup two times and has also won 5 IPLs. Outstanding captain. I think this will be his last World Cup as a captain. I hope he will win the trophy and finish successfully," Ganguly told India Today.

Rohit and his predecessor Virat Kohli will lead India's batting line-up in the World Cup. However, Ganguly has high expectations from the young Shubman Gill, who has dominated the 50-over format like no other this year.

In 20 ODIs, Gill has aggregated 1230 runs at a staggering average of 72.35 and a strike rate of 105.03 with five hundreds, which also includes a double ton against New Zealand.

“Many good players are there. But I am looking forward to watching Shubman Gill. He has played brilliantly. Jasprit Bumrah is also playing very well,” Ganguly added.

India will begin their World Cup campaign against five-time champions Australia in Chennai on October 8.
