Rohit Sharma had missed the last World Cup at home in India in 2011.
Rohit Sharma will be leading the Indian team for the first time in a World Cup and amidst huge expectations from him and the team, it will also fulfill his dream of playing in the ICC event in front of the home crowd.
The Mumbai batter was available for selection when India last played the World Cup at home in 2011, but several reports have stated that the selectors instead went for an extra spinner in Piyush Chawla on request of captain MS Dhoni and Rohit missed out on selection.
The opener has gone on record to reveal multiple times that he was shattered after being left out of India's 2011 World Cup squad, which went on to win the title under MS Dhoni’s captaincy.
But now this dream of his will be fulfilled and Rohit Sharma celebrated with a funny gesture when Ajit Agarkar announced the India squad for World Cup 2023 and said: "Rohit Sharma, captain". Rohit, sitting beside him, raised his fist in celebration, and gave a broad smile before settling down and listening to the other names.
