India and Sri Lanka are facing off in the Super 4s Stage of the ongoing Asia Cup 2023 on September 12, at the R Premadasa stadium in Colombo. This is the third straight day that India is on the field.

India captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and decided to bat first, revealing that Akshar Patel was included in the XI in place of Shardul Thakur keeping the pitch in mind.

Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill added 80 runs for the first wicket with Gill making 19 runs and Sharma completing 10,000 ODI runs during his knock of 53.

But then, Dunith Wellalage came to action and removed the top three of Rohit, Shubman, and Kohli in no time. Kohli, who had hit an unbeaten century against Pakistan, only managed 3 runs. There was a small partnership between KL Rahul (39) and Ishan Kishan (33), but Wellalage and Charith Asalanka ended that soon.

Hardik Pandya (5) and Ravindra Jadeja (4) couldn’t do much against the Sri Lankan spinners and fell quickly. Akshar Patel was unbeaten on 15, with Mohammed Siraj for company.

Wellalage finished with 5/40 in his 10 overs, while Asalanka picked 4/18 in 9 overs. India was 197/9 in 47 overs when rain arrived. Wellalage also became the youngest Sri Lankan spinner to take a five-wicket haul in ODIs.

The cricket fraternity was praiseful of the 20-year-old Sri Lankan spinner who picked his maiden ODI fifer.
