Veteran India wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik on Sunday (September 10) praised the Indian openers for coming out with positive intent against Pakistan's star pacer Shaheen Afridi in the Asia Cup 2023 Super-4 clash at R.Premadasa Stadium, Colombo.

Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill took the Pakistan attack to the cleaners, stitching a 121-run opening partnership to set the foundation of India’s massive total.

The duo was particularly severe on Shaheen, who had troubled the Indian batters in the group match on September 2. Rohit smashed the left-arm quick for a six in the very first over of the match and then Gill carried on the assault.

Speaking on Cricbuzz, Karthik said that the Indian openers’ fearless approach against Shaheen would worry Pakistan ahead of the ODI World Cup 2023.

The arch-rivals are due are square off in the upcoming World Cup at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on October 14.

"The way Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill batted vs Shaheen Afridi, will worry Pakistan. I think the conditions suited fast bowling at the start of the innings, but India called the shots," Karthik stated.

Shaheen, however, bounced back in his second spell and picked the prized scalp of Shubman with a slower delivery.

"It becomes tough as a batter to pick Shaheen Afridi's slower delivery because of his wrist flick. Second time Shaheen Shah Afridi has deceived an Indian batter," Karthik added.

Coming to the match, Rohit was dismissed for 49-ball 56 while Gill departed after scoring 58. Virat Kohli (8*) and KL Rahul (17*) were trying to rebuild when the heavens opened up and the play was called off for the day, with India at 147/2 in 24.2 overs.

There is a reserve day in place for this game and the play will resume on Monday (September 11).
