England registered a three-wicket victory over Australia in the third Test at Headingley on Sunday (July 9) to stay alive in the Ashes series.

Chasing 251 to win, the Three Lions were 27/0 at stumps on Day 3. However, Australia’s left-arm pacer Mitchell Starc wreaked havoc on the English batting line-up on the penultimate day, reducing the hosts to 171/6 at one stage with his five-wicket haul.

Amid the pressure situation, young batter Harry Brook held his nerves and played a stunning knock of 75 in the second innings to put England on the brink of victory. In the end, Chris Woakes (32*) and Mark Wood (16*) returned with handy knocks to drag the home team across the finish line.

After the game, Brook admitted that he had a blow-up after getting out to Starc when the team still needed 21 runs.

"It's a lot more nerve-wracking when you're sat up there than in the middle. I'm not one to blow up when I get in the changing room but I had a little blow-up today. I like getting us over the line and yeah, it was annoying that I didn't today, but I'm happy we won," Brook said, as quoted by Sky Sports.

"Everybody [in the dressing room] erupted. We only needed about 20 runs, and I had complete and utter faith in Woakesy and Woody. It was tense for a little while but when Woody hit that six, we kind of knew it was on," he added.

Brook stitched a crucial 59-run partnership with Woakes when England were down to six wickets in the fourth innings.

"Me and Woakesy were just trying to build a partnership there, just trying to go down in fives: we got it down to 40 and we said, 'Let's try and get it down to 35'; then, 'Let's try and get it down to 30.' Then obviously I got out, which made it a bit more nerve-wracking,” Brook stated.

With this victory, England kept the Ashes alive at 2-1 heading to Old Trafford, slated to host the fourth Test from July 19.
