England pacer Ollie Robinson’s seemingly verbal abuse aimed at Australia opener Usman Khawaja was one of the major talking points of the first Ashes Test at Edgbaston.

During the third day’s play, Robinson dismissed Khawaja for 141 runs and when the latter made his way back to the pavilion, the former was seen exchanging words with him.

Robinson appeared to shout “F*** off, you f***ing p***k” at Khawaja after knocking him over.

After the close of play on Day 3, Robinson said that the "passion of Ashes" got to him. He also defended his action by mentioning Australian legend Ricky Ponting.

"We've all seen Ricky Ponting, other Aussies do the same to us. It's not well received simply because the shoe is on the other foot," Robinson said in a press conference.

Meanwhile, Ponting has slammed the English paceman for dragging his name into an Ashes sledging debate.

"As I said after Ollie Robinson said what he said, this England cricket team hasn't played against Australia and they'll find out pretty quickly what playing Ashes cricket and playing against a good Australian cricket team is all about. And if Ollie Robinson hasn't learned that already after last week, then he's a slow learner,” Ponting told The ICC Review podcast.

"Some of the things he had to say - I mean he even brought my name into it, which I felt was a little bit unusual but for me it's water off a duck's back - if he is sitting back thinking about me, then no wonder he bowled like the way that he did in that game if he's worried about what I did 15 years ago.

"He'll learn pretty quickly that if you're going to talk to Australian cricketers in an Ashes series, then you want to be able to back it up with your skills," the former Australia captain added.

Ollie Robinson, who picked up five wickets in the Ashes 2023 opener, was involved in a heated exchange with Usman Khawaja on Day 5 as well.

“Freebie, isn’t it?” Robinson told Khawaja, as quoted by Wisden.

“Half volley, field up? In the rough mate,” Khawaja replied.

“That’s why you’re not a batsman. Nice to see you say something,” came Robinson’s response.

“Be careful what you say, mate,” said Khawaja.

This altercation was caught on camera and led to veteran campaigner James Anderson shepherding Robinson away from Khawaja.

Coming to the Ashes 2023 opener, Australia won the game at Edgbaston by a narrow margin of two wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

The second Ashes Test is scheduled to get underway on June 28 at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground.
