Rohit is going through a lean patch with the bat lately.
For the Caribbean tour, Indian selectors are likely to pick the team on June 27 and all-format skipper Rohit Sharma is expected to be rested for some part of the series, TOI reported.
Notably, Rohit is going through a lean patch with the bat lately. After enduring a dismal IPL 2023 campaign, he registered scores of 15 and 43 across the two innings of the recently held WTC final against Australia at The Oval.
“Rohit looked a bit jaded during the IPL and the World Test Championship final in England. The selectors want him to rest for some part of the West Indies tour. He’s likely to miss the Tests or the eight-match white-ball series (three ODIs and five T20Is) to follow. The selectors will speak to Rohit and then take a decision,” a source close to developments told TOI.
According to the report, if Rohit misses the two Tests, Ajinkya Rahane might be named the stand-in captain for the West Indies tour. On his comeback to the Test team, Rahanne scored 89 and 46 in the WTC final against Australia.
On the other hand, Cheteshwar Pujara, whose place in the team has come under the scanner, might get a lifeline if Rohit Sharma or Virat Kohli will be rested.
As per the report, there’s also a big possibility that either or both pacers Mohammad Shami and Mohammed Siraj will be rested for the Test series in West Indies.
