In their second innings, Australia was buoyed by 66* from Alex Carey and 41 from Marnus Labuschagne and Mitchell Starc , while Steve Smith added 34 runs to his first innings knock of 121, as Australia declared for 270/8.
For India, Ravindra Jadeja took three wickets, while Mohammad Shami and Umesh Yadav picked 2 wicket each.
India was given a target of 444 runs to win the match and began by losing Shubman Gill to a contentious catch by Cameron Green for 18 runs. Rohit Sharma and Cheteshwar Pujara counterattacked a bit with India captain falling for 43 with 7 fours and 1 six, while Pujara made 27 runs with 5 fours.
Virat Kohli was unbeaten at stumps on 44 in 60 balls with 7 fours, while Ajinkya Rahane showed his tenacity once more with 20* in 59 balls.
During his knock, Kohli played a beautiful drive off a Mitchell Starc full delivery and received some well-deserved applause from his captain Rohit Sharma who was sitting in the pavilion.
