Bangladesh registered a historic win over New Zealand in the first Test of the two-match series in Mount Maunganui on Wednesday (January 5).

The match was wrapped up in one session on the final day as Ebadot Hossain took a career-best 6/46 and the hosts were bowled out in their second innings for 169. Taskin Ahmed also returned with impressive figures of 3/36 in the second essay.

The tourists, then, chased down the lowly 40-run target with eight wickets in hand. It was Bangladesh’s maiden Test victory in the Kiwiland and only their sixth win in 61 away Tests.

This result also brought to an end New Zealand’s unbeaten streak in their last 16 Tests at home.

Earlier, Bangladesh took a massive first-innings lead of 130 runs to put the BlackCaps on the backfoot. The visitors rode on half-centuries from Mominul Haque (88), Liton Das (86), Mominul Haque (78) and Najmul Hossain Shanto (64) to pile up 458/10 in the first essay in reply to home team’s 328.

Thanks to Ebadot’s six-wicket haul in the second innings, Bangladesh bundled out the Kiwis cheaply and ultimately created history.

As Mominul and his men recorded an incredible win over the inaugural World Test Champions in their own den, the cricket fraternity hailed the side's achievement.
