New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern praised Kane Williamson-led New Zealand cricket team's memorable win in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final. They defeated India by 8 wickets and won the first edition of WTC.

The match was interrupted by rain and two days were completely washed out. An outcome was only possible due to the reserve day and New Zealand came out on top due to their disciplined batting, followed by an easy chase.

"The Black Caps have made New Zealand proud. This was a masterful performance from a team at the top of their game and on top of the world.

"Kane Williamson and the team leadership have built a brilliant and humble squad who have become an inspiration to many New Zealanders," Ardern said in a statement.

New Zealand won their first-ever ICC title in the 2000 Champions Trophy under Stephen Fleming, which also came against India in Nairobi.

The Kiwis came close to winning the ICC tournament in the 2015 and 2019 World Cup, but they lost in the finals. But this time, they finally lifted the trophy and the New Zealand PM acknowledged the team development over the years.

"Over a number of years now we have seen the development of a team and team culture that has taken New Zealand cricket to world-beating heights," Ardern further said.
