Former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar believes the issue with India's wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant is his shot selection. Gavaskar's comment came during the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final when Pant played a few unorthodox shots.

Gavaskar said Pant sometimes breaches the thin line between carefree and careless cricket. The youngster was dismissed in the WTC final after scoring 41 runs. He had danced down the track and hit the ball straight in the sky which ended up in his dismissal.

“There is a thin line between carefree and careless. Pant has at times breached the line of carefree and careless,” Gavaskar said during commentary on Wednesday (June 23).

“A couple of times he went for a big hit when he was in the 90s and missed an opportunity to score a hundred. The only issue with Pant is always going to be his shot selection; otherwise, he has a got the defence, got all the shots and technique,” he added.

There were a lot of times when Pant tried to charge down the pitch against New Zealand pacers but missed the delivery. He even tried reverse lap and scoop shot in the second innings of the WTC final which India lost by 8 wickets.

India managed only 170 runs in the second innings and put on a target of 139 runs which was chased down by New Zealand after a couple of early blows. Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor's unbeaten 96 runs partnership ensured New Zealand the WTC title.
