Legendary Australian spinner Shane Warne on Saturday (June 19) expressed disappointment over New Zealand’s decision to not include a spinner in their playing XI for the World Test Championship (WTC) final against India in Southampton.

For the marquee game, Team India opted to go with two specialist spinners in Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja while the Kiwis preferred a four-pronged pace attack, comprising Tim Southee, Trent Boult, Neil Wagner and Kyle Jamieson.

Baffled by the decision, Warne tweeted: “Very disappointed in Nz not playing a spinner in the #ICCWorldTestChampionship as this wicket is going to spin big with huge foot marks developing already. Remember if it seems it will spin. India make anything more than 275/300 ! The match is over unless weather comes in !”

In reply, a Twitter user wrote: "Shane do you understand how spin works? The pitch gets dry... this pitch won't get dry because for the rest of the test, there is due to be rain".

The response of the netizen drew everyone’s attention on Twitter, including the former India opener Virender Sehwag.

Sehwag took a screenshot of the reply and tagged Warne, a veteran of 145 Tests and 708 wickets, in his tweet, stating: "Frame this, @ShaneWarne and try to understand some spin".

Coming to the match, India got off to a decent start after being invited to bat first. The duo of Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill added 62 runs for the opening wicket.

However, the BlackCaps pacers pulled things back, dismissing Rohit (34), Gill (28) and Pujara (8) in quick succession to reduce India to 88/3.

Afterwards, the pair of captain Virat Kohli (44*) and his deputy Ajinkya Rahane (29*) took matters into their hands and forged an unbroken 58-run stand to take India to 146/3 in 64.4 overs at stumps on Day 2.
