Lord's could miss out on hosting the World Test Championship final: Report

India and New Zealand have made it to the WTC final.

Team India on Saturday (March 6) thrashed England by an innings and 25-run in the fourth and final Test at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.

By virtue of this emphatic victory, India didn’t only clinch the Test series 3-1 but also booked their place in the World Test Championship final. They will face New Zealand in the summit clash in June this year.

Soon after India’s WTC final qualification, a report published in TOI claimed that the iconic Lord's Cricket Ground could miss out on hosting the historic event.

Lord's was slated to host the final from June 18 but according to TOI, the ongoing pandemic has got the ICC planning for an alternate venue in England.

"The venue will be announced soon. Lord's is not the venue the ICC is planning for. ICC will be advised by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and its own medical health professionals to decide on the venue for the final. There could be a case of creating a similar bio-secure bubble as the ECB had for the last home summer," an ICC source told TOI.

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, England had hosted West Indies, Pakistan and Australia in Southampton and Manchester last year. Both the venues have five-star lodging facilities in the premises.

However, the ECB has announced different venues for India's Test series against England later this year. As per the schedule, India will play the five Tests at Trent Bridge, Lord’s, Headingley, The Oval, and Old Trafford from August 4 to September 14.
