The Indian men's team had refused to accept the Asia Cup trophy from Mohsin Naqvi last year.
The Men’s Asia Cup concluded with a massive controversy in September last year as Team India refused to accept their winners' trophy and medallions from ACC and PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi, who is also Pakistan’s Interior Minister and posted anti-India sentiments on social media throughout the tournament.
Furious with India’s stand, Naqvi took the silverware and medals in his custody. After BCCI’s protest, he said that if India want the trophy, their captain can collect it from his ACC office in Dubai.
The 2025 silverware still remains at the ACC office because the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) rejected Naqvi's conditions.
The trophy drama might be repeated in the ongoing Women’s Asia Cup as well. According to a Geo Super report, the PCB chairman is set to attend the continental event final on September 13 as he's the designated chief guest for the closing ceremony.
Naqvi is expected to hand over the trophy, just like the last time. But, as happened in the 2025 Men's Asia Cup when he insisted on personally handing the trophy to India and left the Suryakumar Yadav-led side empty-handed, the situation might result in another deadlock.
The Indian team, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, are the firm favorites to clinch the Women’s Asia Cup and have already qualified for the semifinals after winning all three of their group-stage matches.
While the BCCI has remained quiet regarding what the women's team will do, Harmanpreet and her teammates are unlikely to accept the trophy from Naqvi if India go on to win the championship.
Earlier in the Women’s Asia Cup 2026, Harmanpreet Kaur didn’t shake hands with her Pakistan counterpart Fatima Sana when the two teams met each other at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
Notably, the BCCI implemented a strict no-handshake protocol with the Pakistani squad members following the Pahalgam terror attack and retaliatory Operation Sindoor in 2025, a stance the men's and women's sides have maintained in every meeting on the cricket field.
