Rohit Sharma perished early for 8 runs and Virat Kohli got out for 24 in 24 balls after a short partnership with Rishabh Pant (20). However, the India innings was salvaged by Suryakumar Yadav (53 in 28) and his 60-run partnership with Hardik Pandya (32).
Some late hitting by Akshar Patel propelled India to 181/8 in 20 overs. For Afghanistan, Fazalhaq Farooqi and Rashid Khan picked three wickets each.
In reply, Afghanistan's top order tried to go hard at the Indian bowlers in the powerplay and lost wickets at regular intervals.
Azmatullah Omarzai top-scored with 26, while Najibullah Zadran (19) and Gulbadin Naib (17) were the other main scorers. Afghanistan only managed 134 runs and India won the game by 47 runs.
For India, Jasprit Bumrah shined with 3/7 and Arshdeep Singh took 3/36, while Kuldeep Yadav, playing his first game in the tournament took two wickets as well. Suryakumar Yadav was named the Player of the Match for his fifty. India will next face Australia in Antigua on June 22.
The cricket fraternity praised India for its win and lauded Jasprit Bumrah's performance.
