Rohit hasn’t played a T20I since India’s T20 World Cup semi-final exit.
The announcement came less than a month after Hardik returned to MI, following a high-profile trade from Gujarat Titans (GT), whom he led in the past two seasons.
This move also raises uncertainties about Rohit's future in the shortest format of the game. Notably, the 36-year-old hasn’t played a T20I since India’s T20 World Cup semi-final exit.
However, a report published in Dainik Jagran claims that Rohit Sharma will feature in the T20 World Cup 2024, slated to be held in the West Indies and USA in June.
According to the report, Rohit expressed his wish to be confirmed as India’s captain for the T20 World Cup from now itself in a recent meeting with BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar and head coach Rahul Dravid.
The report further stated, citing the BCCI source that the board is in favour of naming Sharma as captain if both he and Pandya are part of the squad.
Ever since the T20 World Cup 2022, Hardik Pandya has been leading the T20I side. However, the all-rounder is currently recovering from the ankle injury he sustained during the World Cup 2023 match against Bangladesh in Pune on October 19.
In his absence, Suryakumar Yadav recently led the Indian T20I team in South Africa as Rohit Sharma has been rested for the white-ball leg of the Proteas tour.
