Sri Lanka opened their T20 World Cup 2021 campaign with a six-wicket win over Bangladesh at Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Sunday (October 24).

Asked to bat first, Bangladesh posted 171/4 in 20 overs on the back of Mohammad Naim’s 52-ball 62 and Mushfiqur Rahim’s unbeaten 57 off 37 balls.

Chamika Karunaratne (1-12), Binura Fernando (1-27) and Lahiru Kumara (1-29) claimed one wicket each for Sri Lanka.

Chasing the stiff target, Sri Lanka got over the line with seven balls to spare. Charith Asalanka starred with the bat for Sri Lanka, scoring 80 not out off 49 deliveries. Bhanuka Rajapaksa also played a significant knock of 31-ball 53.

Shakib Al Hasan returned with impressive figures of 2 for 17 in his three overs but it wasn’t good enough for his team to seal the win.

For their impressive showing in the chase, Charith Asalanka and Bhanuka Rajapaksa garnered rich praise from the cricket fraternity on Twitter.
