Former India spinner R Ashwin has shared pessimistic views about India's women’s journey in the ongoing ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 in England and Wales. India women opened their tournament with a big win over rivals Pakistan in Birmingham on June 14.

After India captain Harmanpreet Kaur won the toss and chose to bat first, Smriti Mandhana starred with 68, with 9 fours and 2 sixes. Harmanpreet made 36, and Richa Ghosh’s 17-ball 34 provided the death overs impetus as India made 170/6.

In response, Muneeba Ali made 41 and gave Pakistan a good start, but then Indian spinners took over, and the opposition just kept on losing wickets. Shree Charani took three wickets, while Deepti Sharma earned the Player of the Match for his 5/10. India won the game by 64 runs as Pakistan folded for 106 runs.

However, Ashwin believes India may struggle against stronger opponents later in the tournament, particularly power-packed sides such as Australia and England.

"I am not sure India will go very far in this T20 World Cup because there is a lack of power in the lineup. While India were excellent against Pakistan and their spin attack once again proved decisive, the team still lacks the depth that sides like England and Australia possess. India's combination appears slightly short on power-hitting options, which could become a concern in tougher matches against stronger opponents. Compared to the strong lineups of England and Australia, India's overall team depth remains a significant worry," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel, Ash Ki Baat.

India will next play the Netherlands on June 17 before facing South Africa women on June 21, Bangladesh women on June 23 and Australia women on June 28.
