PCB has decided to impose a fine of PKR 50 lakh each on Pakistani players.
Former Australia batter Usman Khawaja laughed in disbelief as commented on PCB’s decision to impose a fine of PKR 50 lakh each on Pakistani players for their dismal show in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.
According to a report in ESPNCricinfo, the move to penalize the players was made right after Pakistan’s 61-run thrashing at the hands of India in the group stage.
Salman Ali Agha and his men were reportedly told the fines may end up being waived off if Pakistan reached the semi-finals, but they failed to go beyond the Super 8 phase of the tournament.
In a video shared on his Instagram account, Khawaja called the idea to punish players an ‘absolute shambles’.
“I just heard that the Pakistani players got fined after the T20 World Cup. I mean, I didn’t believe it at first, but it must be true. It’s absolutely amazing that the PCB could think this is a good idea. Sorry, I’m laughing because I can’t believe it," Khawaja said.
“Just think, what high-performance team in the entire world, let alone cricket, fines players for losing games? They’re not trying to lose cricket games! How does that even make them perform better next time? All it does is put more pressure and stress onto the players. They’re already under enough pressure. They’re Pakistani players, the whole country is watching. Even selections in the past have put pressure on them, and now, on top of that, you’re fining them? It’s in absolute shambles. I really feel for the Pakistani players. Poor Pakistani players," he added.
Khwaja labelled Pakistan cricket as a whole ‘drama series’, which keeps on surprising him with unique turn of events.
“Yeah, I’m lost for words, honestly. That’s why I made this video. I can’t believe it. Every time I think Pakistan’s not going to surprise me, they surprise me. It’s like a drama series. I can’t wait for the next episode," he remarked.
The Men in Green began their T20 World Cup campaign on a nervy note, almost enduring a loss against the Netherlands. The team then defeated the USA but were crushed by arch-rivals India.
Pakistan went on to defeat Namibia in their last Group A clash and qualify for the Super 8s. Their opening fixture against New Zealand in the Super 8s was washed out, forcing both teams to share points. Following this, they endured a loss against England, which left their fate hanging as far as the contention for semifinals were concerned.
Although England’s win over New Zealand gave Pakistan hope, they failed to make it count against co-hosts Sri Lanka. The 2009 champions won the match but couldn’t overtake the Kiwis on Net Run Rate to enter the semis.
