Abhishek's health crisis reportedly began on February 6.
Team India are battling injury and health issues in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026. In a fresh setback, explosive opener Abhishek Sharma has been all but ruled out of the team’s second Group A clash against Namibia following a severe stomach infection and subsequent hospitalisation.
While Abhishek was discharged from the hospital on Wednesday (February 11), it is unlikely that the team management will rush him to the playing XI for Namibia game, especially with the marquee fixtures against Pakistan scheduled for Sunday (February 15).
According to a TOI report, the stomach issue has led to Abhishek losing a significant amount of weight due to dehydration in a short period.
The health crisis reportedly began on February 6, following a net session at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
The report further claimed that the southpaw consumed something that triggered stomach upset. Despite being unwell on the day of India’s campaign opener against the USA, Sharma showed immense courage and chose to play the game. However, he bagged a golden duck and didn’t come to field during the second innings.
Abhishek Sharma was noticeably absent from the dugout as well, and couldn’t join his teammates even for the post-match handshakes following India's 29-run victory over the USA.
The stomach bug, coupled with a change in weather, led to a high fever and severe dehydration. After suffering significant fluid loss and weight loss, Abhishek was admitted to Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi for medical supervision.
On the eve of the Namibia encounter, India batter Tilak Varma confirmed that Abhishek has been discharged from the hospital and has been recovering well. However, he didn't confirm if the left-hander is ready to feature in the playing XI.
"Abhishek went to the hospital, he went to get some tests done, and has been discharged now. He is doing well. We will decide how he feels tomorrow and take a call on the game," Tilak told reporters.
Meanwhile, the report suggested that a decision has been made to rest Abhishek for the Namibia match to avoid any long-term risks. In fact, the batter has reportedly summoned his personal trainer to Delhi to oversee his rehabilitation and strength training before the team departs for Colombo to face Pakistan.
