Elgar stood up tall with the bat for South Africa on Day 2 of the Boxing Day Test.
In reply to India’s first innings total of 245, South Africa lost Aiden Markram (5) early but Elgar put on a 93-run stand with Tony de Zorzi to bail the hosts out of trouble.
While Jasprit Bumrah dismissed de Zorzi (28) and Keegan Petersen (2) in quick succession, Elgar held the one end firmly. The southpaw added 131 for the fourth wicket with debutant David Bedingham and notched up his 14th Test hundred in the process.
Mohammed Siraj broke the partnership by removing Bedingham for 56 whereas Prasidh Krishna got rid of wicketkeeper-batter Kyle Verreynne (4) cheaply, but Dean Elgar batted through the day to finish unbeaten on 140 off 211 balls, including 23 boundaries.
Thanks to Elgar’s stunning century, the Proteas ended the second day on 256/5, leading India by 11 runs.
For dominating the Indian bowling attack on a tough pitch, Dean Elgar was appreciated by the cricket fraternity on social media platform ‘X’.
