The first ODI of the three-match series between New Zealand and India got underway at Eden Park in Auckland on November 25, 2022, and the visitors were given a good total to defend thanks to some good finishing by Washington Sundar.

Kane Williamson had won the toss and chosen to bowl first. India gave debuts to Arshdeep Singh and Umran Malik. Shikhar Dhawan with 72 and Shubman Gill with 50 gave a good start adding 124 runs for the opening wicket.

Then Shreyas Iyer did well to score 80 in 76 balls with 4 fours and 4 sixes, but the wickets fell in hurry in the middle. Sanju Samson made 36, but the innings which propelled India past the 300-run mark was Sundar’s superlative effort of 37* in 16 balls with 3 fours and 3 sixes.

The left-hander, whose exploits at the international level have been largely limited to off-spin bowling, showed the world what he can do with the bat. During his knock, his one shot against Matt Henry made everyone go wow.

Henry bowled the 49th over of the Indian innings and Sundar moved way outside off stump to scoop the ball over the short-fine fielder in the process of trying to get the elevation, he fell on his behind as well, but managed to get the ball away for a four.

In the end, India finished on 306/7 in 50 overs with Time Southee and Lockie Ferguson taking three wickets each.
