Shubman Gill, India's Test captain, was named T20I vice-captain as well.
Gill's ascent up the captaincy hierarchy has been nothing short of a dream come true. After Rohit's final test assignment was the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Gill took over and guided India to a historic 2-2 tie in the tense series in England.
While Rohit Sharma had led India to two ICC trophies, he has called time on his career in two formats—T20Is and Tests. He only remains active in ODIs, where he captains India. Gill, on the other hand, recently made 754 runs in five tests against England, including twin centuries (269 and 169) in the Edgbaston Test.
Citing Gill's prolific run in the cash-rich IPL, Kaif expects him to emerge as an all-format captain and also spoke about the future of Rohit Sharma.
"In the last three years, Gill has scored 2,000 runs. He is the future captain. He is the Test captain, and in T20Is, he is the vice-captain. Rohit is the ODI captain. He is almost 38 and I believe will retire after the 2027 ODI World Cup. When he steps away, Gill will become the captain,” Kaif said on his YouTube channel.
Shubman Gill was recently named the India T20I vice-captain and included in the squad for the Asia Cup 2025 tournament in the UAE, which begins on September 9.
In 21 T20Is, Gill has made 578 runs in 21 innings at an average of 30.42, with a strike rate of 139.27. He has scored a century and three fifties, with the best score of 126*.
