WATCH: “A captain needs to give players freedom,” Mohammad Shami heaps praise on Rohit Sharma’s leadership skills

Rohit Sharma led India to the T20 World Cup title earlier this year.

Rohit Sharma is widely regarded as one of the best captains in the modern-day game. He has led Mumbai Indians (MI) to five IPL titles and also captained Team India with great success in all forms of the game.

Under his leadership, India have won two Asia Cup titles and made it to the finals of the World Test Championship and ODI World Cup last year. However, the ultimate glory came in June of this year when he led the Men in Blue to the T20 World Cup triumph in the Caribbean.

Recently, senior pacer Mohammad Shami heaped praise on Rohit’s leadership skills, highlighting latter’s ability to give players freedom and recognize their potential in different situations.

Shami also mentioned that Rohit’s rich experience playing with his teammates allows him to fully understand each player’s strengths and how to use them efficiently.

"I hadn’t played much under Rohit before, but I saw it clearly during the World Cup. A captain needs to give players freedom, and Rohit provides that. As a captain, you must know which player can perform best in a given situation, and he understands that well since he’s played with everyone for so long and knows their abilities. Woh acchi tarike se janta hai kis player se kaab nikalna hai (He knows exactly when to get the best out of each player)," Shami told Sports Tak.

Meanwhile, Mohammad Shami recently shared a positive update on his fitness, saying that he’s fully recovered from his knee issues and is aiming to take part in India’s upcoming Test tour of Australia.

“I am 100 percent pain-free. Everyone has been wondering for a long time about whether I will make it for the Australia series but it is still some time away,” Shami told reporters, before adding that he would like to play a few Ranji Trophy matches for his state side, Bengal.

"The only thing on my mind is to ensure that I am fit and how strong I can be for the Australia series. I can see what kind of attack we need in Australia. I have to spend more time on the ground. I want to play a couple of (Ranji) matches before I go," the fast bowler remarked.

The Border-Gavaskar Trophy between India and Australia, comprising of five Tests, is slated to get underway on November 22 in Perth.
